LONDON – A major step forward for professional American football in the UK has been confirmed, as a new London-based franchise is set to join the European Football Alliance (EFA), a newly formed league born from a split within the existing European League of Football (ELF).

The franchise, rumoured to be named the London Guard, will be based at Leyton Orient’s BetWright Stadium in East London. This follows the acquisition of the football club earlier this year by a U.S. consortium led by businessman David Gandler of the Gandler Sports Group.

The EFA is positioning itself as a fresh alternative for American football in Europe, with the London franchise expected to play a central role in the league’s expansion and visibility. London stands as the perfect launchpad for the EFA’s UK debut—an iconic global city with world-class transport, a thriving media scene, and a dynamic commercial landscape primed for rapid growth and fan engagement.

The BetWright Stadium offers a credible, ready-made venue for hosting professional fixtures, and London’s time zone aligns well with international broadcasting schedules, including U.S. primetime slots.

While full details on coaching staff and player recruitment are yet to be released, early indications suggest a strong focus on British talent, with international expertise likely to be part of the mix.

This development comes amid growing tensions in the European American football scene. According to American Football International, the ELF has threatened legal action against the newly formed EFA, signalling a competitive and potentially contentious landscape as both leagues vie for prominence. These disputes underscore the significance of London’s entry into the EFA, which could become a pivotal factor in shaping the future of the sport across Europe.

This marks a significant moment for American football in the UK, opening new pathways for athletes and expanding the country’s role in the global sports and entertainment landscape. More details are expected to follow as the franchise prepares for its official launch, and further announcements will be shared as they are released.
